In the world of coffee, freshness is king. Whether you’re a coffee roaster, café owner, or just an avid coffee drinker, preserving the flavor and aroma of your coffee is of upmost importance. What a lot of people don’t know is that the key to maintaining coffee’s freshness lies in not only the beans but also its packaging.
When choosing the ideal packaging for your coffee, it’s essential to keep in mind these three factors as they are known to deteriorate the quality of your coffee:
  • Light – causes the development of off flavors
  • Moisture – causes not only spoilage but mold growth
  • Air - causes oxidation and a stale taste
When looking for flexible packaging in a retail setting, an aluminum barrier will be the most protective against the three factors listed above. The aluminum barrier acts as a flexible tin can to block out light and does not allow for moisture and air penetration. Not only will your coffee be protected but it will also prolong your coffee’s shelf life and allow your coffee to be as fresh as the day it was roasted. For home storage, a metal container with airtight seals is an excellent option. We recommend against using glass or see-through containers as they allow for light penetration and the development of off flavors. This storage method is most suitable for whole bean coffee.
